What are in your opinion the most respectable professions, regarding the skill-level which is needed in order to be exzellent in that profession? My favourites are:

1. physicist: able to understand weird and strange phenomena, thinks in at least three dimensions...

2. director: to create a good movie one needs good skills in any art, because movies are a composition of almost all arts, like music, photography, acting, lyrics, architecture and so on. And the greatest art is to merge them into one great work. Good organizational and social abilities are also neccessary.

3. undercover agent or spy: what a job! Highly dangerous and one has to do things you'd never wanted in order to stay undetected. Needs high intelligence, courage and actings skills!

Now to the most despicable job: Paparazzo umpf
I think the more a profession helps the people arround them, the more they deserve respect for their work.

That's why I've got big respect for rescuehelpers, doctors, streetworkers, firemen and caritative jobs.
And for the same reason i find it hard to honor professions like investment-banker or any other who provides his live by taking the money from other poeple.
I agree that physicists and other scientists need the highest skills to be good at it, compared to others. But I think the most respectable (and important) profession in any case is farming/agriculture. Unfortunately these jobs are very unpopular Rolleyes
Politician is among the most respectable professions - if you want to be really good, you have to...

* develop or recognise good ideas
* decide right when a compromise is acceptable and when inacceptable
* get along with very different types of people, including power hungry other politicians, manipulating lobbyists, dissappointed voters and of course the overly critical journalists
* be convincing and able to explain complex things in a simple way
* never see the power as your natural right
* have the right touch when chosing your allies and staff
* be moral enough to avoid any scandals

I absolutely agree with you.

Well the question was, which professions are most respectable regarding the skill level which is neccessary for them, and not how useful they are.

What kind of skills do you mean? When it is intelligence - in students was found - the brightest were lawyers, followed by physicists and technical engineers (physicians follow further behind).

I mean the sum of abilities which is neccessary to be successful in the job. Intelligence is a part of them, but also courage, empathy, imagination...
I would say nurse in a mental health hospital...
