I have been wondering for a while what's the use of tolls. They generate pathetically little income, so I though I'd try to get them as low as possible to, hopefully, increase happiness a bit. Do tolls have any other effects and do they even affect happiness?
Well, I'm also new but in this reasons, I think like it is in reality. What use have tolls? Pay tolls means that you have to pay to trade with foreign countries. If you increase them, trade with foreign countries will be handicaped. That means: imports and exports are going to be less important or at least the number of those trades falls. That could provide a stronger economy for your state, because your people buy products from your own companies.
On the other handside I think about trades for industrial countries. They depend on ressource imports. And they export their products to get more money. So just think about the consequences and try a bit, thats how I handle it.

If you did not understand me ('cause I'm a German Wink but I don't think my English is that bad ^^) or the others think, I said rubbish, please tell me. Learning means to keep yourself young Wink

If the effects of tolls are made like I think they are, than they should have only a indirect effect on happiness.

Tolls make foreign products more expensive, so your imports would decrease, but that would also decrease the cash-flow from your nation to others, so that there is much less of your currency on the world market, that would increase the worth of your currency and handicap your exports.
It will have a effect on the happiness when it affects the net income.
I thought of them as things like road tolls and so I figured people would be happier if they didn't have to pay them...

Any chance of Malone sharing his expert knowledge on the subject ?
If think the german version of the game gives the answer:

Toll roads are called "Mautstraßen" in german and the tax on import goods is called "Zölle".

If you use the german version of your budget you will see that the tolls are translated with "Zölle" so the import tax is meant.
Well, why only import tax? Why not import AND export? Of course, import would be more effective, but there isn't written "import tolls" oder "export tolls" (if it was so, he wouldn't have asked Wink )
