Sharp drop of popularity

In my state of Wiccera http://www.ars-regendi.com/state/183949/regent.html
I have experienced a sudden massive drop of popularity in just a quarter (60)
Which causes a successful assassination.

I don't think the tasks I've taken would have that huge ramification on popularity, I mean sure that would causes negative points, but I never expected it to fall from 5 to -8 in one quarter:

Outsourcing
Unions complain about the exploitation of workers due to outsourcing
The consequence of your decision was:
More and more departments are being outsourced to other countries.

62% of all regents (including you) decided like this:
"If a company thinks it can live with those risks, then the state should not intervene." replies Zachary Selby, senior consultant at an economic research institute. "Outsourcing can strengthen the whole economy since work is performed more effectively despite the costs of coordination. Many departments experience a much higher degree of capacity utilisation. The state should stay out of our business!"

Internet Firewalls
Different institutions argue for limitations on internet access
The consequence of your decision was:
Internet addiction alienates more and more citizens.

49% of all regents (including you) decided like this:
"Internet should remain free for everybody!" demands Uma Brinkman, an unemployed office clerk who has profiles at numerous internet dating services and premium pay accounts at some game sites. "Any limitation would be paternalism!Free citizens know best how to spend their time. And internet should be free for unemp...I mean, economically disadvantaged people!"

I'm also finished the Personal Rapid Transit at the same quarter
I'm totally at lost with this one Noplan

I think people are mad about you allowing companies to outsource, I don't see why anybody would be mad about the 2nd one. Think of it this way, you are allowing companies to move their business to places where they can higher cheap labor and people are losing jobs then, and it also angers strong nationalists. Naughty naughty capitalism. But considering how low it dropped that would mean either a bug =D (I didn't look before writing) or you just have a lot of angry nationalists and socialists

Yeah, the game told me that I was assassinated by left wing dissident Sad

You have been assassinated and so your regency over Wiccera is finished. Near the explosion a claim of responsibility by left-wing extremists was found, but some people disbelieve its authenticity.

I was thinking that this could be a bug since I've taken more liberal measures before and there are minimal effect on the popularity since I'm balancing it in social-liberal kind of mindset.

Anyway, I'll just start another one now, I'm just using it as a trial and error of flat tax and basic income dynamics in this game, and quite satisfied with how it balances itself. Wink

What about negative income tax, doesn't it basically do both help out the poor and even go higher tax on the rich?

RE: Sharp drop of popularity

I could imagine that this happened because of the PRT. Based on how fast it was finished in this state, you probably had very high PE projects. This in turn means, that a great deal of your economy was devoted to this project. Its sudden end had a strong negative effect on the economy (-8% in the last quarter before the assassination, however no way to see what it looked like at the transition 59 => 60), but the happiness drop is quite remarkable. However, it might be related to the basic income as well. Many cases where reported in which the population became very unhappy despite a high basic income and a smooth running economy.

Spot on!

@Theolor
A true flat income tax (no deductions or exceptions) is a fair/proportional tax. People with bigger incomes will pay more than those with fewer. The thing is, (in real life) the rich don't get their money from income - but from capital gains. That's why despite having a progressive rate, Warren Buffet pays less in income tax than his janitor. If you want a fairer and sound fiscal system, add to the flat tax the capital gains tax + the land value tax; and then focus on government spending to achieve a lower GINI.

@MrProper

Now that you mention it, I began to think it is the main contributor of my downfall. I keep on increasing the budget on the project, it seems when it was finished it is causes an shrinking economy, I think I also supplied too much money in the process.

@Theolor, Helsworth

True that, in reality there are too many tax loopholes and exemptions. However I still believe that the ideal flat tax is a fair system, as for capital gain I was worried that it would hinders growth as it seems to discourage investment. But as you said, it wouldn't be a fair system if the rich is taxed lower than the rest. Should I set it at the same rate of income tax next time?

The problem when a huge project finishes is not 'excess money' but the game's capacity (or lack thereof) to compute such big changes number-wise.
As for the capital tax, I'm currently experimenting with a 9,7% rate. My fiscal deficit is not enough to cover the foreign sector's desire to net save, let alone my own domestic sector's. But then again, AR does not include the sectoral balance ((G-T)= -(I-S) -(X-M)) as part of its design. Anyways, I'm trying to reduce income, contributions, and excise taxes whilst also increasing spending.
